Evolution of the Surrealist Bust

"A taste of the Ocean"
Ceramic, Acrylic Paint Sand and Shells
14x9x8

Most of my pieces that I have created throughout my high school career have been based on the constant theme of the beach. For my surrealist bust, I decided to include certain features that remind me of the ocean. Initially, I wanted to include more shells then intended, but I then decided it would be more eye catching if I included sea creatures; such as the tentacles of an octopus, starfish, and fish scales. The surrealism behind my piece is shown in the hair where the girls fish tail braids are gradually turning into octopus tentacles. Every part of the girl is slowly turning into a sea creature. Basically, the girl loves the beach so much that she is turning into a sea creature (aka me). After an unintended explosion in the kiln, I covered the cracks with sand to further show the surrealism behind the piece. Instead of putting it back in the kiln for a glaze firing, I painted the bust with acrylic and glued on sand and seashells. I also added makeup for the fish scale texture.
